What To Check Before The First Ride Of The Season

The crew over at Jafrum.com put together this great piece on how to get your bike ready for the upcoming season. Take a look at exactly what you need to check out to make sure that your first ride of the year is perfect.

Battery

Even if your battery has been hooked up to a trickle charger, or un-hooked, open the filler screws and check the water level, and more importantly, check to see if the plates are straight (plates that have started curving will require you to change the battery).

If your battery was disconnected, top it up with a battery charger. If the water level is low, fill it up with demineralized water.

Oil & Filters

The first thing to check is the engine’s oil and air filter. Your bike has been immobilized for a while, and all oil has gone to the bottom. Start your engine for a few seconds to warm it up and then shut it down. Check the quality of the oil from the dip stick, looking for very small particles embedded in the oil. Best thing you can do if your bike has been out of action for a few months is change the oil and filters. Play it safe.

Tires

Many motorcycles when they are stored in a garage are left on their tires. The weight of your bike will be pressing down for months, so you’ll need to inspect if spots & cracks have started to appear in your tires. Today’s tires are very solid, but you never know. A spot (color difference) in your tire can spell disaster when riding.

Make sure your tires are all up to their proper air pressure.

Leaks

Oil-LeaksCheck below your motorcycle for oil and hydraulic fluid leaks. If you do find some, better find out where it is coming from and fix it.

Lights

Turn on the lights and check all of them, including the blinkers. Bulbs can die off when not in use.

Chain

Check the tension in your chain. Make sure it’s according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Nuts & Bolts

Its a good idea to go around your bike and tighten all nuts & bolts. It’ s not really necessary, but it’s one of those things that does not cost much time, but can save you a lot of grievance later on.

Bike reviews can seem really cookie-cutter at times, so it is really refreshing to see Motor Trend enter the game and bring with them a new outlook on what a review video should look like. Motor Trend is usually known for their content with cars, but we must say that their work with motocross bikes thus far is looking pretty promising. We are sure excited to see what the next video will look like. This video features the 2012 Honda CRF250R, which you can pick up right here at Cycles! 128.

Dungey Maintains Points Lead Heading to Oakland

Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey picked up his third podium in three rounds with an impressive second place in the third round of the of the AMA Supercross Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Dungey retains the red plate as points leader.

Dungey had a decent gate pick for the main event and got off to a flying start. He grabbed the holeshot and locked in battle for the lead with rival Ryan Villopoto. Shortly after the race was red flagged when Trey Canard and Ryan Morais crashed.

He then got away well in the restart, was fourth at the first corner and sat there for the first seven laps in a four-way battle with Jake Weimer, James Stewart and Chad Reed. He was able to move up to third after Weimer went down and then fought for second place with Stewart, who also crashed and handed Dungey his second place. He is the only rider to have been on the podium in in all three races so far this season and is now 4 points clear of Villopoto and Reed who are tied for second.

Ryan Dungey: “It feels great to hold the red number plate as we head into the fourth round. It’s still early in the series, but it is definitely off to a good start for the Red Bull/KTM Team. I can’t thank everybody on the team enough. They have put in so many hours and we have made so much progress on the new 450. The bike is running amazing.”

SX Lites
Although his night did not turn out as he expected, Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Marvin Musquin still put on an impressive performance in the SX Lites category and was the third fastest in practice and third in his heat.

He settled in well in the main event, quickly moving up from his seventh spot at the first corner. He had his sights on the lead group and looked in the running for another podium. With three laps to go, Musquin was within a bike length of the two riders battling out for second place when he landed too far to the outside of a triple. It planted his front wheel in a mud hole, brought his bike to a halt and pitched him over the handlebars. Marvin was uninjured but winded and was unable to complete the main event. Despite his DNF he was listed at nineteenth place in the results.

Marvin Musquin: “I had trouble breathing after the crash so I could not return to my bike.” Medical staff said he would be sore and bruised but would be able to ride next weekend. It was a better race outcome for Matt Moss of the JDR J-Star KTM team who finished in eighth in the Lites.

Just came across this pretty cool video by Motor Trend comparing the Ferrari 458 and the Ducati 1198S. Definitely interesting to see the juxtaposition between the pinnacle of Italian auto engineering and the performance of the best motorcycling has to offer. Check out the video for yourself! By the way, as much as we love Ferraris, we are Ducati boys every day of the week!

Check out these pics by Kim Cyr from the Stimilon Masters of Mini race that was held at Cycles! on November 12th. The course actually went from the parking lot through the warehouse! The racing was awesome, but the event itself is what keeps people coming back. It is such a fun atmosphere and a great way to wrap up the racing season. We hope everyone will come check it out next year!

These are only a few of the shots from the event. Check out Kim’s full gallery here.
